This web-based training game is designed to accelerate student training in FMS operation. It has demonstrated it can enhance the results of a training program by reducing errors, increasing student motivation for self-study (thus reducing need for remedial training and allowing more efficient use of simulator and instructor time), and make graduates more "flight line" ready upon completion of training.
This fully-functional web-based game was developed for the Office of Naval Research (ONR) and the Naval Air Command (Navair), to accelerate skill acquisition in an important aviation competency-Flight Management System (FMS) Operations. The game, which integrates both whole-task and part-task training, is based on an extensive cognitive task analysis of the skills and knowledge required to program the FMS and was designed using the principles behind Anacapa's Game Based Training Tool (GBTT), which matches training environment requirements with best-fit game elements.
The effectiveness of the FMS game in training pilots how to operate the aircraft's FMS device quickly and accurately has been demonstrated in a series of empirical studies using students from Arizona State University's flight training program. When compared to students who received comparable subject matter content in the form of conventional computer-based training, students who interacted with the FMS game performed significantly better on subsequent criterion transfer tests.
