The GBTT is a decision aid tool to facilitate the development of effective training games. Details of training requirements are matched with appropriate game element variations (e.g., feedback, challenge, realism), producing recommendations and links to a game design pattern library. The project is jointly sponsored by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) and the Naval Air Command (Navair).
The project has produced GBTT, an empirically-based decision aid, to help instructional designers and others determine when and how key gaming elements can be incorporated into conventional training programs in order to improve performance outcomes. GBTT is a multi-dimensional capability consisting of a query-structured relational database, a proprietary application engine, Design Patterns for adapting system features from one task domain to another; and an arsenal of fully-developed serious games targeted for complex functional task areas.
The foundation of the tool is a crosswalk linking specific types of training objectives and environments to specific game element variations that have been demonstrated to have the potential for improving performance in those environments. The output of the tool is a set of recommendations for which specific game elements would be most appropriate to incorporate into a given training environment in order to achieve specific training objectives.
