Combat systems for surface ships and attack submarines are complex and provide a massive amount of data. A very expert operator can manage this complexity through application of cognitive strategies tailored to the tactical situation at hand, that identify what subset of data is critical for the task. The expert then arrays the critical data in an appropriate cognitive visualization that supports performance of the task. The combination of cognitive filters and visualizations then provide cognitive dominance of his particular task space. If all of the members of a watch team are experts, they develop a team cognitive dominance of their battle space.
Anacapa applies proven technologies for ensuring cognitive dominance in all operators – not just the most expert ones. The technology was proven in the 1990’s for electronic warfare (EW), resulting in an augmented processing and display system that Navy evaluators concluded would also reduce the EW watch team from two operators to one, while simultaneously improving overall performance. That product, patented by Raytheon Engineering has been re-proven for surface-ship anti-submarine warfare (ASW), emerging as the Situation Visualization (SitViz™) Toolset designed for application to advanced Navy surface ships. Operators actuate SitViz tools which pop-up over the native display, and persist only as long as the operator needs to achieve cognitive dominance for a particular task. During the period that a SitViz tool is visible, it pulls together critical task information from the native display, or cues the operator’s attention to some part of the native display that provides critical task information.
Engineering for cognitive dominance for submarine applications focuses on developing pop-up SitViz tools that specifically support operator workflow management and surface scene management while submerged. To illustrate, the figure provides an example of pop-up SitViz tools tailored for surface ship ASW but applicable to submarine applications. An expert strategy for managing the tactical situation is represented by a set of Frames [the contacts appearing in each frame are the result of Boolean filtering of contact data in the Total Ship Computing Environment] and a Contact Worksheet that highlight key attributes which pop-up momentarily on the geo-sit display.
